West Bank – Major advances for the future Master’s in Nursing sciences at the Ibn Sina College (ISC) School of Nursing and Midwifery in Nablus

The USI led a key workshop to support the development of the future Master’s in Nursing sciences, scheduled to launch in 2027.

As part of the project Support for the Development of the Ibn Sina College (ISC) School of Nursing and Midwifery in Nablus, the USI conducted a working visit to Amman, Jordan, from November 25 to 30, 2025, to facilitate the second workshop dedicated to the design of the future Master’s in Nursing Sciences, set to launch in September 2027. This workshop is part of ongoing efforts to structure academic programs in nursing, particularly for the development of this new program.

The initial sessions provided an overview of the project progress, examined the national and international standards that will guide the design of the new program, and reviewed the main objectives of the Master’s program. The discussions highlighted the strengths of the project, challenges to overcome, and several avenues to ensure the relevance and coherence of the future program with the university’s priorities as well as the healthcare system’s needs.

The following days were dedicated to developing the competency framework for the Master’s in Nursing Sciences. Teams adjusted competencies according to the expected graduate profile, discussed potential course titles and preliminary content, and reflected on the overall program structure of the Master’s program, including prerequisites and semester organization. This work resulted in the creation of an initial program matrix, which will serve as the foundation for the later detailed design stages.

A workshop session was also dedicated to gender integration. The Gender Advisory Committee (GAC) presented updates on its work and outlined upcoming steps. Subsequently, a practical exercise enabled each group to present the simulation scenario they had developed, along with a draft proposal incorporating an analysis from a gender perspective. This workshop helped strengthen understanding of the importance of integrating consistently and transversally integrating equity issues into the future program.

Additional working sessions allowed participants to advance the research development component at ISC. Various committees reported on the status of their work, challenges encountered, and future priorities.

The week concluded with a synthesis session during which participants reviewed the results achieved, provided feedback, and planned the next steps. This working visit to Amman represents a significant milestone in the development of the Master’s in Nursing Sciences. The advancements made lay the groundwork for a robust program, support institutional strengthening, and promote a thorough integration of gender issues, in a sustainable perspective that benefits nursing education in the West Bank.

Despite the particularly challenging context in the West Bank, project activities continue with determination thanks to the commitment of the teams and partners.

The project Support for the Development of the Ibn Sina College (ISC) School of Nursing and Midwifery in Nablus is a five-year initiative funded by the Agence française de développement (AFD) and implemented by the Croix-Rouge française in partnership with the Croissant-Rouge palestinien and the Université de Montréal (through the International Health Unit (USI) and the Faculty of Nursing). The ISC, which is part of the Nablus University for Vocational and Technical Education, is one of the only public nursing and midwifery schools in the West Bank. The project thus aims to contribute to improving the quality of care in the West Bank by modernizing ISC’s educational offerings, its equipment, and its operations as a training and research center.

The USI, in collaboration with the Faculty of Nursing, provides its expertise in health education and research, particularly in nursing sciences. It also contributes to the development of innovative teaching modules and the implementation of participatory workshops to enhance the competencies of the ISC faculty members.
